Water Damage Prevention Partnership

A drip. A burst pipe. A leaky shower stall. A misaligned sprinkler.

Each year, water causes millions of dollars' worth of damage to California homes. And the problem only seems to be growing worse, with insurance claims for water-related losses increasing each year.

But as dramatic as the losses are, many of them could be prevented.

With program partners Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and the Institute for Business and Home Safety, the Insurance Information Network of California has undertaken "10 Minutes for Water," an effort to teach homeowners the importance of household water checkups and routine maintenance on water fixtures.

The effort encourages homeowners to take a few minutes each year to inspect household water connections, hoses and water pressure to avoid potential damage to their homes and help conserve water.

Like taking the time to change the oil and maintain our cars, we should take time each year to inspect and maintain the water connections in our homes. A small investment in time and labor may prevent thousands of dollars of water damage in the future and help conserve California's precious water resources.
