What do an engineer, a good student and a senior citizen have in common? Their professions may qualify them for special discounts in their auto and homeowner policies.

American families are grappling with tough economic times and some may even be thinking about reducing or even dropping some of their insurance policies. But consumers’ good habits can help trim their insurance costs by tapping a wide array of available discounts.

Insurance discounts can run the gamut. Some involve your own efforts to lower risk – such as installing security alarms, fire sprinklers or earthquake retrofitting. Others involve insurer claims studies that show how policyholders from certain professions such as teachers, engineers or even good students cause fewer traffic accidents. If you’re a retired senior, you may qualify for discounts because potential damage from household risks such as burglaries, water leaks or broken pipes are decreased due to the amount of time you spend at home.

“There are many ways to save money on your insurance without skimping on coverage,” said Candysse Miller, executive director of the Insurance Information Network of California. “During tough economic times you shouldn’t gamble with your financial future.”

Your insurance agent or company may also recommend increasing your deductible, which can result in significant savings. Insurers may also reward you with a discount if you’ve been their customer for several years or if you have multiple policies with them.

As with other major consumer purchases, shop around for the best coverage that fits your specific needs. You may find equal or even better coverage than you currently have, at a lower price.
