Digital Cameras, Online Data Banks are Useful Homeowner’s ToolsFires, earthquakes and floods are just some of the catastrophes that have wiped out the personal possessions of Californians in the last decade. When disaster strikes, a thorough home inventory can be the key to settling claims quickly and accurately.
Easily said, but many homeowners feel they do not have the time to carry pad and pen from room-to-room, documenting a life’s worth of possessions.
Popular new consumer technologies may help mute their concerns. With digital cameras, online service centers and cyberspace storage facilities, homeowners can document and update their inventories easily and securely.
“By using some of the latest technologies, creating, storing and updating a home inventory is easier than ever,” said Candysse Miller, executive director of the Insurance Information Network of California.
Begin by listing major items in each room. Include information such as serial numbers, purchase prices, present value and dates of purchase. Then photograph or videotape each room, capturing the major items.
Digital photographs or videos can be uploaded into cyberspace for safekeeping. Internet service providers often include free web space in service agreements. Free online “communities” can also be created for this use, and allow their managers to limit or prohibit access.
Even without a digital camera, photos can be developed and delivered on a compact disc. Store the disc, along with your inventory list, in a safe place outside of the home.
When creating a home inventory, don’t forget to include items such as mattresses, luggage, clothing, small appliances, sports equipment and garden tools. Even carpets, drapes and flooring should be listed on the inventory list and photographed.
And using computer technology to create and store a home inventory will make it faster and easier to update it every year or after the purchase of an expensive item. In the event of a fire or other household catastrophe, an inventory is only as good as its most recent update.
Many insurers offer online guides to home inventory preparation. A brochure outlining home inventories is also available on the IINC website at www.iinc.org or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to IINC, "Home Inventory," 900 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 1414, Los Angeles, CA 90017.
