IINC Offers Info on Filing Disaster Claims for Victims

Insurance adjusters are on their way to the site of a house explosion that ravaged a Torrance neighborhood this morning. Dozens of homes have been damaged or destroyed, providing a solemn reminder that a disaster can happen at any moment.

The standard homeowners insurance policy covers damage caused by fires, explosions and falling debris. Residents whose cars were damaged or destroyed in the explosion are covered under the comprehensive portion of their auto insurance policy.

The Insurance Information Network of California recommends that those affected by the explosion take the following steps to help settle their insurance claims quickly and accurately.

  • Notify your insurer of the damage as soon as possible. If you have vacated the premises, make sure your representative knows where to contact you.
  • Make a detailed list of all damaged or destroyed personal property. Don’t throw out damaged property until you have met with an adjuster. If possible, gather pictures of damaged items and inventory lists to help assess the damages.
  • Keep receipts for additional living expenses, which are any costs you incur over and above your normal daily expenses because you have to stay in a hotel or drive further to work.
  • Make temporary repairs only if necessary to ensure safety or to prevent further damage, and save receipts for reimbursement.
  • Don’t be rushed into signing repair contracts and deal only with reputable contractors. If you are unsure about a contractor’s credentials, contact your claims adjuster, Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce for referrals.
